Problem VIB-1

I'm having trouble figuring out how to relate the bar and the disk in this problem. I drew my FBD's with a total of 3 forces on the bar (Cy_dot, Ky, and 3mg) and 3 forces on the disk (F, N, mg). I would think you would need reactions forces but I'm not sure if that's true. Beyond this step I figured you would use Newton Euler Equations to find the sum of forces in the direction of motion for both the bar and the disk as well as the moment about point O of the disk. If someone could let me know if and where I went wrong for some clarification. Thanks.

All that you are missing are the reaction forces Ox and Oy on the bar and on the disk. Be sure to make these equal and opposite pairs of forces on the bar and disk.

With those forces included, you now reduce the one equation for the bar (summation of forces in x) and the two equations for the disk (summation of forces in x and summation of moments about O) into a SINGLE differential equation.

You will then need to enforce the kinematics relating the translation of point O to the rotation of the disk.

Let us know if you run into more problems.

That helps a lot. Thanks.
