Instant centers in the real world!

Jack Shaffner, Chief Engineer for the Purdue SAE Formula Team and recent student in ME274, sent me this photo the other day of their Formula car. He asked if I could see the instant center of rotation of the rear wheel on the car. He pointed out that the least motion-blurred letter on the tire is the "Y" in Goodyear, the letter closest to the no-slip point.

Excellent photo!

Is the letter Y least blurred becuase it is "stationary" at this instant in time?

Yes. The "Y" is closest to the no-slip point of the tire on the ground. Therefore it has the smallest velocity and therefore the least blur.
